About Ted Vives
Ted Vives’s musical saga began in 1964 in Auburn, Alabama. A prodigious talent, he was only four when he first explored the piano under the tutelage of Edgar and Dorothy Glyde. This early passion blossomed, encompassing trombone performances and music composition, enriching his public school education journey.
Studied Years and Early Career
His academic path led him to Florida State University, where he honed his Composition and Music Education skills. Under the mentorship of esteemed composers like John Boda and Charles Carter, he refined his trombone performance with William Cramer and John Drew and embraced conducting under James Croft. His relentless pursuit of excellence propelled him to obtain a Master of Music in Composition and Music Theory and a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Florida.
Award-Winning and Achievements
Today, he is the esteemed Musical and Artistic Director of the Los Alamos Community Winds. This ensemble has achieved significant acclaim, notably as a finalist in the American Prize, Community Wind Ensemble Division. His compositions have captivated audiences worldwide, earning accolades such as the North Cheshire 2003 Composition Competition. His innovative spirit led to his selection as the Commissioned Composer for the Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico in 2003 and 2010. He received the 2011 American Prize in Composition (Choral Division) and secured third place in the 2015 American Prize in Conducting.
Current Work
Diverse roles mark his professional journey. He has served as the State Composition Chair for the Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico and the Artistic and Musical Director for the White Mountain Symphony Orchestra in Show Low, AZ. His commitment to the musical fraternity is evident through his memberships in prestigious organizations like Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Phi Kappa Phi, WASBE, Music Educators National Conference, Music Teachers National Association, National Band Association, and The Conductor’s Guild.
Hobbies
His creativity extends beyond music. He is passionate about Star Trek Scale Modeling and Sewing/Costume creation. These hobbies reflect his deep-rooted love for envisioning, crafting, and innovating – parallel to his musical endeavors.

He cherishes his life in White Rock, NM, with his wife Paula, their children Alex and Abby, and their beloved pets. His home is a haven that reflects his values of balance, commitment, and creativity.
